About Rick
Rick Young's martial arts journey commenced in 1975 training under Shaun Shanley laying the foundation for an illustrious career defined by dedication and a search for excellence. His early years were marked by the practice of Judo and boxing, setting the stage for a lifelong pursuit of mastery in various combative disciplines.

Our classes
No Gi grappling is a form of martial arts without the traditional uniform.
It combines aspects of combat, submission, and wrestling techniques.
Practicing No Gi improves agility, speed, flexibility, balance, and adaptability in different fighting scenarios.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on throwing, ground fighting and submission holds. Practicing BJJ improves self-defense skills, physical fitness, mental toughness, confidence, discipline, and stress relief.

Muay Thai is a traditional Thai martial art that utilizes striking techniques involving hands, elbows, knees, and legs. Kali Escrima is a Filipino martial art that focuses on weapon-based fighting and empty-hand techniques. Our open mat training sessions are designed to help students focus on specific areas of improvement and practice in an out of class setting.
Participants have the chance to engage in sparring, drilling, and technique analysis to enhance their skills.

Started in 1982 by Professor Rick Young in Leith/Edinburgh, the Rick Young Academy has been a beacon of excellence in martial arts education. Our commitment to providing a family-oriented and inclusive environment has allowed us to nurture and guide numerous students over the years.
